« AniMystikAKtivist » is first and foremost an encounter between two different universes, worlds, and periods. The past is mixed with the artist’s contemporary scenography, thus demonstrating the importance of African art in the European tradition. ‘AniMystikAKtivist’ goes beyond the aesthetic and ethical question of ancient and modern. With a touch of dark humour, Kendell Geers examines various Afro-European traditions including animism, alchemy, mysticism, rituals and socio-political activism. A self-described ‘AniMysticAKtivist,’ the artist draws on his personal experience as a white African to answer questions about history, culture and identity. Mission-driven, politically moving, and socially engaged, Geers’s work is neither European nor African, but rather an extended metaphysical dialogue between cultures, archetypal signs, and sacred symbols. ‘AniMystikAKtivist’ is a reflective work on reading, an exorcism of subject matter, form and tradition, images located at the crossroads of our expectations and the limits of our experience.
