GALLERY - BRUSSELS

For the very first time, the Galerie Didier Claes is exhibiting a selection of pieces by Cameroonian artist Franck Kemkeng Noah. These unique and original works, completed on discarded pieces of carpet, are a dual reflection on the memory of iconic places (among them museums and palaces) and their occupation by “themes” that reference his artistic origins. Fusing opposing and diverse cultures, the paintings are brought to vivid life by a play of light and shadow that gives way to emotions and memories. Taken from life, the characters that make up his scenes are frozen in a moment, as if suspended outside time. Interrupted on their paths, they trigger reflection and introspection. Through his art, Kemkeng Noah invokes a form, a verticality that symbolises the need for everyone to take a step back from their environment, their existence, their world. His artistic creations are inspired by current events, beliefs, history, his social surroundings and “popular” movements. The concept of interculturalism and the fusion between African – Bamileke, to be exact – and Western origins are essential to his creative process. Kemkeng Noah is a multidisciplinary artist whose research does not revolve around a single medium. His work has an experimental feel and is characterised in the main by the use of painting, sculpture, interactive performance, and installations.
